Abstract

Professore di storia della filosofia a Firenze, Giulio Preti vide con sospetto sintesi troppo facilmente armonizzanti tra l’argomentazione teorica e la ricerca storiografica. A livello storiografico, Preti si interessò, tra l’altro, ai conflitti e alle tensioni filosofico-religiose della prima modernità e studiò il pensiero religioso di B. Pascal e di G.W. Leibniz, giudicandoli entrambi stimolanti dal punto di vista teorico – nel paradosso, per il primo, e nel razionalismo universalistico, per il secondo - ma entrambi perdenti dal punto vista storico-ecclesiastico. Un rapporto fortemente antinomico tra religione e scienza, a tutto vantaggio di quest’ultima, è trattato direttamente in un capitolo dell’opera teoreticamente più impegnativa di Preti, Praxis ed empirismo, accusando le posizioni del più o meno sofisticato agnosticismo contemporaneo di non prendere abbastanza posizione su questo rapporto.

Professor of the history of philosophy in Florence, Giulio Preti viewed with suspicion overly harmonious syntheses between theoretical argumentation and historiographical research. At the historiographical level, Preti was interested, among other issues, in the conflicts and philosophical-religious tensions of the early modern period and studied the religious thought of B. Pascal and G.W. Leibniz, considering both stimulating from a theoretical standpoint – in the paradox for the former, and in universalistic rationalism for the latter – but both losing from a historical-ecclesiastical perspective. A strongly antinomic relationship between religion and science, to the advantage of the latter, is directly addressed in a chapter of Preti’s theoretically most demanding work, “Praxis and Empiricism,” accusing the positions of more or less sophisticated contemporary agnosticism of not taking a strong enough stance on this relationship.
