Abstract

Giuseppe Tucci fu esploratore e studioso internazionalmente noto di svariate culture asiatiche. Dopo aver coltivato inizialmente interessi soprattutto sinologici, fu in primo luogo il Buddismo, nella sua varietà e nella sua capacità di diffondersi e mettere in relazione le diverse civiltà dell’Asia, a divenire sempre più il fuoco della sua ricerca, anche dal punto di vista filosofico-religioso (tra i suoi studi più noti sono quelli sul Tibet). Con il Buddismo, inoltre, ha scritto l’allievo R. Gnoli, Tucci «credeva fermamente a una diversa dimensione della realtà» e, corrispondentemente, se da un lato «era rispettosissimo» di tutte le forme storiche di rapportarsi verso tale diversità assoluta, dall’altro lato, però, riteneva ciascuna di esse insufficiente ad esprimere quella diversità come tale e si diceva quindi «ateo nel senso buddhistico del termine».

Giuseppe Tucci was an internationally renowned explorer and scholar of various Asian cultures. After initially cultivating interests primarily in Sinology, it was Buddhism, in its diversity and its ability to connect different civilizations in Asia, that increasingly became the focus of his research, also from a philosophical-religious perspective (among his most notable studies are those on Tibet). Furthermore, with Buddhism, as his student R. Gnoli wrote, Tucci “firmly believed in a different dimension of reality” and, correspondingly, while he “was very respectful” of all historical forms of relating to that absolute diversity, he also considered each of them insufficient to express that diversity as such, and thus described himself as “atheist in the Buddhist sense of the term.”
