Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze the historical and legal relationship between the right to vote, universal suffrage and the principle of equality, as a supporting column of democratic systems also in the light of the latest pandemic events. However, if this relationship was ensured on a formal level by the electoral procedures, the electoral abstention at the last electoral rounds shows that economic and social inequalities have increased due to the pandemic. The consequence is that this relationship risks wavering on a substantial level. Therefore, the State must do positive actions.
