Lattes Dante

Abstract

Dante Lattes fu una figura centrale dell’ebraismo italiano del XX secolo. Il giudaismo, sottolinea Lattes, non è solo una religione ma la forma esistenziale di un’esperienza collettiva nella quale convergono dimensioni diverse come la fede religiosa (emunà) e l’appartenenza a una storia (toledot), l’etnicità di popolo (‘am Israel) e la particolarità di una cultura/civilizzazione (tarbut) sviluppatasi attorno all’ebraico (‘ivrit), lingua ad alta densità simbolico-semantica, il tutto amalgamato dalla convinzione che il messaggio religioso e politico del giudaismo – il monoteismo e il primato della giustizia sociale – siano valori assoluti e universali, che i figli di Israele sono chiamati a vivere al di qua e a far conoscere al di là dei confini etnico-confessionali. In tal senso Lattes costituisce un punto di mediazione di tre distinte prospettive: quella mistica e organicista di E. Benamozegh, quella romantica e ‘spirituale’ di A. Ha’am e quella profetica e socialista di M. Buber.

Dante Lattes was a central figure in 20th-century Italian Judaism. Judaism, Lattes emphasizes, is not just a religion but the existential form of a collective experience that converges different dimensions such as religious faith (emunà) and belonging to a history (toledot), the ethnicity of the people (‘am Israel), and the particularity of a culture/civilization (tarbut) that developed around Hebrew (‘ivrit), a language with a high symbolic-semantic density. All of this is blended with the conviction that the religious and political message of Judaism – monotheism and the primacy of social justice – are absolute and universal values that the children of Israel are called to live out within and to make known beyond ethnic-confessional boundaries. In this sense, Lattes serves as a point of mediation among three distinct perspectives: the mystical and organicist view of E. Benamozegh, the romantic and ‘spiritual’ perspective of A. Ha’am, and the prophetic and socialist outlook of M. Buber.
