Ottaviano Carmelo

Abstract

Carmelo Ottaviano fondò già da giovane e diresse per quarant’anni la rivista «Sophia», nata con l’intento di contrastare l’idealismo e, di conseguenza, l’immanentismo che egli ad esso vedeva legato. Insegnò nelle università di Cagliari, Napoli e, per molto tempo, Catania. Egli intese riallacciarsi alla tradizione del cristianesimo, sostenendo il realismo da una prospettiva fortemente trascendente, ed indicando nella mediazione del Cristo la possibilità concreta della redenzione in cui, insieme all’uomo, tutta la realtà anela ad essere riassunta nell’unità. La dimensione del soprannaturale viene così originariamente connessa con quella della terrenità umana e questa relazione si compie solo nel pensiero che si fa fede, in quanto è esclusiva potenzialità di un pensiero che è un tutt’uno con la fede di poter cogliere il soprannaturale che si manifesta e riportarlo alla comprensibilità dell’uomo.

Carmelo Ottaviano founded and directed the magazine “Sophia” for forty years, starting from a young age, with the intent of opposing idealism and, consequently, the immanentism he saw as linked to it. He taught at the universities of Cagliari, Naples, and for a long time, Catania. He sought to reconnect with the tradition of Christianity, advocating realism from a strongly transcendent perspective, and indicating in the mediation of Christ the concrete possibility of redemption in which, along with humanity, all of reality longs to be summarized in unity. The dimension of the supernatural is thus originally connected with that of human earthly existence, and this relationship is fulfilled only in the thought that becomes faith, as it is the exclusive potential of a thought that is one with faith to grasp the supernatural that manifests itself and bring it back to human comprehensibility.
