Abstract
The dignity of the inmate represents a “super-value” of the penitentiary system because it integrates a condition of effectiveness for the rights of the person deprived of personal freedom and, at the same time, is guaranteed by them. The essay, noting that the dignity of the detainee, while unbalanceable, suffers undue compressions at the hands of practice and pententiary legislation itself, aspires to identify the lines of intervention with the aim to ensure the full protection of this “super-value”.
