Abstract

The small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have difficulties to overcome the national boundaries. Among the motivations of this difficulty, there is a lack or inadequacy of competences; it emerges a limit presence of professionals able to face the trial of commercial or productive internationalization. The paper addresses the requirements of professional competences in SMEs operating in the international markets, focussing on the way by which enterprises fill the competence gap. The analysis considers a sample of 300 exporting SMEs located in Lombardy region. The results underline the prevalence of training on the job and coaching in comparison to classroom teaching. In addition research shows that skills’ gap reported by SMEs does not concern specialized competences - as for instance the knowledge of the international trade law or the business ones. Rather skills’ gap is a matter of linguistic knowledge. The causes of the scarce appeal of teaching rest on different explanation such as the characteristics of the geography of internationalization, the international activity developed by SMEs, by the characteristics of markets and by the strategies of development pursued. A binary logit model tests the importance of these factors, and it evidences that coaching and training on the job are substitutes rather than complements of classroom teaching and other external sources of competencies
