Abstract

In this work we propose innovative multilingual methodologies for L2 educators to promote bilingual competence, crucially based on the use of code-switching. As in the translanguaging approach, the two languages in contact are viewed as integrated components of a unique repertoire. Indeed, in our opinion, language mixing should be encouraged rather than stigmatized, as it can serve as a valuable resource, especially for developing oral skills. In particular, we designed a specific training for English L1 learners of Italian as an L2. The first activity elicits Italian lexicon through guided storytelling and image-based descriptions. The second targets gender assignment in Italian nouns and agreement between nouns and their modifiers. A pilot study with six US students showed improvement and yielded positive feedback. Learners reported that the controlled use of English alongside Italian lowered anxiety and helped them focus on lexical development and grammatical patterns.
