Style Guidelines for Text Contributions

Authors have complete autonomy in choosing the style rules for constructing footnotes and bibliographies, with the recommendation that they be applied consistently.

It is also recommended that footnotes be in order and bibliographic references complete.

Authors may, according to their preference:

  • Use the continental system, including a complete bibliographic reference in footnotes. For example:
      • [Book] Paolo Grossi, Prima Lezione di diritto, Laterza, Roma-Bari 2003, p. 23;;
      • [Journal Article] Jerome Frank, “Say It with Music”, Harvard Law Review, Vol. 61, No. 6, 1948, pp. 921-957;
      • [Article in Edited Volume] Raymond Verdier, Le système vindicatoire. Esquisse théorique, in R. Verdier e J.-P. Poly (dir.), La vengeance, Cujas, Paris, 1980 pp. 13-42.
  • Use the Anglo-Saxon system, mentioning only a brief citation in the text (e.g., Grossi 2003: 23) and providing the complete bibliographic reference at the end of the contribution. For example:
      • [Book] Grossi, Paolo 2003, Prima Lezione di diritto, Roma-Bari, Laterza, p. 23;
      • [Journal Article] Frank, Jerome 1948, “Say It with Music”, Harvard Law Review, Vol. 61, No. 6, pp. 921-957;
      • [Article in Edited Volume] Verdier, Raymond 1980, Le système vindicatoire. Esquisse théorique, in R. Verdier- J.-P. Poly (dir.), La vengeance, Paris, Cujas, pp. 13-42.

Texts must be already edited and ready for graphic layout. Therefore, authors are encouraged to:

  • Use the Garamond font (size 12 for the text, size 10 for footnotes, and size 11 for block quotations);
  • Use single spacing;
  • Place the title of the contribution at the beginning of the text without formatting it in uppercase or small caps;
  • Place their name below the main title, indicating their qualifications and affiliation in a footnote (with an asterisk);
  • Avoid using different fonts, formats, and sizes for titles and subtitles of paragraphs. These should be highlighted only through indentation and progressive numbering;
  • Avoid bold or underlined text, using italics or quotation marks to emphasize specific expressions.

Only one draft submission is allowed. Drafts must be returned to the editorial team within fifteen days. Any typos and other corrections should be marked in the margin of the text.

Peer Review

Except for articles explicitly requested by the Editorial Board (invited articles), contributions submitted to Cultura giuridica e diritto vivente for the “Essays” section and, at the discretion of the editorial team, those intended for the “Notes and Comments” section, will undergo a peer review process (double-blind) conducted by one or two reviewers selected from specialists in the field, either within or outside the Scientific Board. They will evaluate the congruence of the contributions with the journal’s content, scientific relevance, currency, originality, methodological quality, validity of results, and writing style.

Specifically, it is envisaged that two anonymous referees will evaluate articles intended for the “Essays” section, and one anonymous referee will evaluate articles intended for the “Notes and Comments” section. Once the suitability of the contribution for publication is confirmed, the reviewers will indicate whether the article should be accepted as is or if it requires revisions and improvements. The referees will also assess the appropriateness of the article’s placement in either the “Essays” or “Notes and Comments” section and the possibility of relocating the contribution to a different section than initially indicated by the author. In such cases, a new evaluation will be conducted following the rules established for peer review in the proposed section by the referees. The author will be promptly informed of all these decisions.
