Abstract
[The Joint Declaration of Francis, Pope of Rome, and of Karekin II, Catholicos of Etchmiadzin. Religious assessments of the current socio-political reality] Pope Francis's visit to Armenia is closely connected with the memory of the Armenian genocide that occurred under the Ottoman Empire a century ago. The Joint Declaration made by Francis, the Pope of Rome, and by Karekin II, the Catholikos of Etchmiadzin and Supreme Patriarch of all the Armenians, is mainly concerned with social questions and current geopolitical assessments. The Armenian Church, which has shaped the national identity of this people, belongs to the 'Ancient Oriental Churches' that have not accepted the decisions taken at the 451 Council of Chalcedon with regard to the dual nature of Jesus Christ who is God and man and formally monophysite. In previous statements, however, the two churches pointed out the substantial identity of the faith they profess.
