Abstract
Like others in Europe, Giulio Andreotti acted cautiously towards German unity, yet at no time did he try to prevent it and did his best to bind the new Germany to European integration. The paper deals, moreover, with concerns about the balance in Europe and Perestroika; the fears of a downsizing of Italy’s international role; criticism in Germany and Kohl’s disappointment with his friend Andreotti.
