Abstract
This paper provides a new reading of a case of episcopalis audientia, known through a famous letter sent by Symmachus to Ambrose. The analysis is based on the concrete realities of late roman ‘legal pluralism’, and on the ‘forum shopping’ which was one of its main consequences.
