Abstract
Mitterrand considered the Germans’ aspiration for German reunification entirely legitimate, but within a framework of democracy and security. He cooperated with Kohl for the launch of the single currency and the Oder-Neisse border agreement. The French leader aimed not to weaken Gorbachev and to enforce a confederation of all European states that would favour the transition of the Eastern countries towards a united Europe.
