Abstract
It is historically untrue that Andreotti’s famous joke about the two Germanies expresses his position on German reuni cation, even among the widespread fears, as unjust, of a reunited Germany. It was Andreotti’s formula ‘Europe hopes for and promotes German unification’ that broke the deadlock between European rulers on the future of Germany: a breakthrough to which the launch of the single currency is also linked. The paper deals, moreover, with the error of the failed European political union.
