Abstract

An analysis of the semantic and ontological complexity of the concept of gratuitousness leads us to uphold the fundamental distinction between the concept of “gift” and that of “gratuitousness”: while the gift tends to remain entangled in the logic of reciprocity and obligation, authentic gratuitousness manifests itself as an act without justifying reasons and outside the logic of do ut des. True gratuitousness belongs to the sphere of the Unconditional. It is not the action of an anthropomorphic “giver”, but the expression of a Principle that precedes logos and law. In this perspective, life itself is not a gift to be returned, but a gratuitous happening that undermines the rational claim to find a justification for every existence.
