Abstract
The problem of abandoned lands (agri deserti) is one of the recurring issues in the Roman historical experience (in different socio-economic contexts), and typical not only of Late Antiquity society. This issue leads to recognize in the Late Antiquity’s law a sort of an expropriation for public utility. Obviously I’am not talking about codified principles but about practical applications in imperial politics. Thus the topic of agri deserti is very productive and actual. It has to be placed in the current hydrological and hydrogeological systems. In the same Roman world the environmental aspects were a relevant substrate in the imperial laws when the Imperators tried to take care of agri deserti.
