Abstract
The various declinations of “neo-Marxism”, from the 1970s to today, although very different from each other, have in common a certain radical critique of Marxian and (above all) Engelsian determinism. Sebastiano Timpanaro, in the seventies, already signaled a certain idealistic drift of Marxist criticism, all united by a strong subjectivist imprint. However, if the problems of determinism have historically been analyzed in depth, the currently dominant characteristics of Marxist subjectivism seem less valued. The article, in the first part, tries to investigate the reasons for Marxian determinism; in the second, he thinks about the cognitive limits of today's exasperated subjectivism. The conclusion invites us to recover the cognitive value of determinism as a form of objectivism, purifying it of the aporias now obvious.
