Abstract
As early as the 1970s, Marxist aesthetic was removed. However, se tut, the most important aesthetic work of Galvano della Volpe, emphasized the cognitive value of art and contributed to overcome Benedetto Croce’s idealistic hegemony in Italian culture. This work opens up new horizons for aesthetic research, enhancing the potential of historical materialism in the interpretation of art. Della Volpe shows interest in structural linguistics, text theory, human sciences. He is attentive not only to sociological aspects, but also to the formal language of art.
