Abstract

Giuseppe Pugliese Caratelli affrontò lo studio del mondo antico in una visione globale, sia in senso temporale - dalle epoche arcaiche alle tarde eredità che influenzarono il Rinascimento e oltre -, sia in senso geografico e interculturale - dal bacino mediterraneo all’India di Aśoka. In ambito storico-religioso, i suoi studi sottolineano, non secondariamente, il ruolo cruciale della polis nella trasformazione della religione greca da ctonia a urania, e rintracciano nel contesto cittadino anche l’origine dei culti misterici, che offrivano ai loro iniziati speranze escatologiche al di là del culto pubblico. Pugliese approfondì altresì il carattere religioso delle prime filosofie, come il pitagorismo, fondato sull’inserimento dell’uomo nella perfetta armonia dell’universo (kosmos), nonché studiò le interazioni filosofico-religiose di movimenti successivi, come il tardo platonismo, estremamente influenti fino al Rinascimento e oltre.

Giuseppe Pugliese Caratelli approached the study of the ancient world with a global perspective, both temporally—from archaic times to the late legacies that influenced the Renaissance and beyond—and geographically and interculturally—from the Mediterranean basin to Aśoka’s India. In the historical-religious field, his studies emphasize the crucial role of the polis in the transformation of Greek religion from chthonic to uranic, and trace the origins of mystery cults also within the urban context, where they offered their initiates eschatological hopes beyond public worship. Pugliese also delved into the religious character of early philosophies, such as Pythagoreanism, based on the integration of man into the perfect harmony of the universe (kosmos), and studied the philosophical-religious interactions of subsequent movements, such as late Platonism, which were extremely influential up to the Renaissance and beyond.
