Abstract

This article is a quick reconstruction, from a diachronic perspective, of the different interpretations and reuses of Antonio Gramsci’s thought by Giovanni Arrighi, with particular focus on the concept of hegemony. The title summarises an intellectual trajectory that began in the 1960s, with Arrighi’s critique of imperialism, reached its peak in the 1970s, with a political use of Gramsci and with a critique of the various theories of imperialism, had a turning point in the 1980s, when Arrighi embraced the world-systems school, and finally knew its most mature articulation between the 1990s and 2000s, with the development of the theory of world hegemony.
