Abstract

This cultural psychology study examines the psychological roots of entrepreneurship among three Indonesian ethnic groups. Despite the diversity of businesses in Indonesia, little research has examined the psychological roots of ethnic entrepreneurship. This study fills the gap by qualitatively comparing Minangkabau, Madurese, and Chinese Indonesian entrepreneurial archetypes using a systematic literature review. Data from academic publications, cultural studies, and anthropological research were evaluated using thematic and comparative methods. The Minangkabau are Cultural Navigators, known for their risk-taking, collective responsibility, and opportunity seeking rooted in migration; the Madurese are Resilient Adaptors, known for their tenacity, pragmatic problem-solving, and conservative financial management; and Chinese Indonesians are Strategic Networkers, known for their long-term perspective and relationship-oriented strategies. The cross-ethnic examination reveals universal traits (family orientation, religious integration, and community networks) and unique risk tolerance, decision-making, and market expansion techniques. This study introduces a new archetype framework that combines cultural psychology with entrepreneurship theory and has practical implications for culturally sensitive entrepreneurship education, policy-making, and cross-cultural business practice. This study helps explain how cultural values and psychological mechanisms influence entrepreneurial cognition and behavior in Indonesia's ethnically diverse and multicultural economy.
